Matching Shingles

I’d like to tell you about what’s been going on with our breezeway roofing project. It all started and we decided to attach our house to the garage. We have a small breezeway section that’s about 15 x 10‘ long running from the house to the garage. We bought the house about a year ago and have been looking into connecting the house to the garage so in the winter when it’s really cold it would be nice and warm to pop into the garage and get something we need.

We drew up the plans found a builder who would frame it out for us and take care of excavation and foundation. Since the roof was only going to be a small section originally I thought I could take the shingles off the back of the house so they would match perfectly. My builder advised against this as the damage would be too much.  So I began a hunt to find the perfect matching shingle. I began by going to the Home Depot and Lowe’s in my area around Providence and looking for shingle samples. I know I had an architectural shingle I’m at the roof of been done in the past 10 years as it looked newer but I wasn’t sure who the manufacturer was. I decided I was going to focus on the big names, GAF, Owens Corning, Certainteed, IKO and Elk. I started with GAF Fox Hollow gray color and brought a sample home and laid it on the roof. It was close but I noticed that my roof have light and dark gray sprinkled throughout in the Fox Hollow shingle was more of a gradient. Next they tried Owens Corning gray but it was much darker than my roof shingle. Even accounting for the sun bleaching it a little overtime. I finally found my match with the IKO Do dual gray shingle. I laid it down on the roof and it was a perfect match just a slight shade darker which accounting for the age of my roof but that was probably the original color. I ended up buying about two squares of shingles along with some drip edge and ice and water shield. My spring got really busy though and I decided to look up roofing contractors rhode island for others to take care of the job for me and I’m glad I did. I got a fair price and they were in and out in a day, dumpsters and permits included. Best decision ever.
